Following its three victories at the Golden Globe® Awards on Tuesday night, ABC has ordered a third season of the popular comedy series “Abbott Elementary” from Warner Bros. Television and 20th Television. Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu, and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, made the announcement yesterday at the ABC Winter TCA Press Tour.
The show is currently airing Season 2 on ABC and will be streamable the following day on Hulu. New episodes air on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT, on ABC.
Season 2 has averaged a 3.58 rating in the advertiser-targeted 18-49 demographic after 35 days of multi-platform viewing, which is a 31% increase from Season 1, according to ABC. It’s also up 13% in viewership, delivering an average of 9.1M viewers per episode in MP35.
Quinta Brunson plays Janine Teagues, Tyler James Williams plays Gregory Eddie, Janelle James plays Ava Coleman, Lisa Ann Walter plays Melissa Schemmenti, Chris Perfetti plays Jacob Hill, William Stanford Davis plays Mr. Johnson, and Emmy® Award winner Sheryl Lee Ralph plays Barbara Howard in the ABC Family series Abbott Elementary.
Quinta Brunson, Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, Randall Einhorn, and the rest of the Abbott Elementary cast and crew deserve a lot of credit for this renewal. This gifted group of artists honors public school teachers, who are true unsung heroes. Our favorite group of educators received two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations this morning and three Golden Globe Awards last night, adding some extra icing to the renewal cake.
In the series, a group of committed, passionate teachers and a somewhat tone-deaf principal are brought together in a Philadelphia public school where, in spite of the obstacles in their way, they are committed to assisting their students in achieving success in life. These outstanding public servants may be underfunded and outnumbered, but they are passionate about what they do, despite the school district’s subpar approach to educating children.
